In the past years the choir's programming has been focused on building its reputation through public concerts with highly regarded guest artists. These concerts have developed a diverse and dedicated following that includes people from across the region. While concerts will continue to be a major focus, The Jezic Ensemble is committed to performing in traditionally underserved areas. As budgets for music instruction and cultural programming in public schools continue to shrink, ensemble members are keenly aware of the important role they can play by providing low cost productions and concerts in conjunction with educational workshops. The outreach program operates under the following guiding principles:
In February 2000, the choir mounted an original children’s theatrical production of The Elephant’s Child. The Rudyard Kipling story was set to new music for women’s voices and African percussion by director Margie T. Farmer, choir member Ruth Kendall, and the group’s guest percussionist, Bob Novak. From February to June, the choir performed the piece weekly in venues including the Kennedy Kreiger Hospital for Children; the Jewish Community Center in Owings Mills; the Towson Unitarian Universalist Church; various schools for special needs students; and in an experimental after‑school program for inner-city students. The project reached diverse student audiences ranging from 200-700 weekly. In all, more than 4,000 students attended performances of The Elephant’s Child. The choir was not financially able to accommodate all of the requests it received for this production, and this year they continue to hear from schools and community groups that would like to schedule a performance. The Jezic Ensemble would like to bring this innovative and engaging performance to additional schools in Baltimore City and to rural school districts in Maryland. A year-long tour has the potential to reach more than 10,000 students across the state. |
